Safer Riders with Bicycle & Scooter Activated Lights

What makes Safer Riders with Bicycle & Scooter Activated Lights Responsible?

One of the highest risks to riders is drivers turning across their path at intersections and driveways. Sometimes even having a green bike lane isn't enough - complacent drivers don't look for riders. Or the riders might be obscured by queued traffic. Vivacity Smart Stud Lights are activated by sensors such as induction loops, so that the lights alongside the bike lane flash when a bike or scooter rider is detected. In 2023 Monash University's Sustainable Mobility and Safety Research group found 78% of Australians are interested in riding a bike, but they’re holding back because they believe there are barriers to them doing so. A separate 2018 study by the same research group found that 99% of all bike lanes on Melbourne roads remain unprotected. Women with children described wanting to make trips by bike in their local areas, but had concerns about “missing links” between bike paths, leaving them vulnerable to motor vehicle traffic. By making riding safer, people are more likely to ride, particularly in congested urban areas. Even though riders deserve separated bike lanes, given their vulnerability, there still has to be gaps in those protected lanes were vehicles enter driveways and roads intersect. Vivacity Smart Stud Lights help create a virtual lane, reminding drivers to look for riders when one is detected within their lane. They've been installed at give locations within Melbourne, on arterial and major local roads within and near the CBD.
