Whittaker’s Sustainability Actions

Sustainable Packaging Development

Whittaker's has engaged in a rigorous research and testing phase to explore sustainable packaging options, such as home compostable, commercially compostable, and recyclable materials. This effort involves a flexible testing process to stay responsive to evolving materials.

Lifecycle Testing

Whittaker's conducts extensive testing, including a 3-month accelerated and a 12-month ambient shelf-life test, to ensure that sustainable packaging alternatives meet their high standards for food safety, quality, and durability.

Carbon Footprint Measurement & Reduction

Whittaker’s has measured its full carbon footprint on an annual basis, establishing a baseline of 2.102 kg of CO₂ per 250g of chocolate in 2024. Through initiatives including transitioning the New Zealand sales team to electric vehicles and completing the electrification of factory forklifts, emissions were reduced to 2.074 kg per 250g in 2025.

Cocoa Farm Geo-Mapping & Traceability

Whittaker’s achieved 100% traceability of all cocoa beans from farm to factory ahead of its 2025 target, geo-mapping 2,400+ farms in Ghana. In 2024, partner co-operatives successfully geo-mapped all 6,563 farms under their management, enabling ongoing deforestation monitoring.

Shade Tree Planting & Farmer Community Investment

Through partnerships with Ghanaian co-operatives, Whittaker’s has funded the planting of more than 170,000 shade trees across 2,000 hectares of cocoa farmland. The programme also established 15 new Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) to promote financial stability among cocoa farming communities.
