The Comfort Group Sustainability Commitments
2010
Soft Landing Mattress Recycling
Since 2010, Soft Landing has been collecting and recycling old mattresses to help divert unnecessary waste from landfill, while recycling essential components to create new products and help create hundreds of jobs along the way. In fact, for every 35 mattresses that are collected and recycled by Soft Landing, they can create a job for someone who needs one. The Comfort Group has been there every step of the way, witnessing this unprecedented growth as a Founding Member and continued Product Stewardship member of the programme.
2018
Internal Training: Learning Edge
Investing in a more equitable future for our diverse workforce, The Comfort Group launched a training program aimed at upskilling factory staff & providing opportunities to study towards formal qualifications. This training gives long-serving staff a chance to learn the core skills that make them future ready and confident to embrace technology improvements we may implement in the future.
2018
Office Waste Reduction
In 2018, The Comfort Group removed all individual workstation bins in an effort to reduce office waste. The bins were replaced by small ‘Friendlypak’ mini desktop bins made from recycled cardboard and reusable plastic liners. Within weeks the landfill created within the office was reduced by up to 90%.
2019
Project Zero
A massive group- and geography-wide undertaking, Project Zero spans all of our manufacturing and operations. It is our commitment to moving towards a more sustainable future as a leading Australasian business. We started by developing a range of fully recyclable beds, followed by moving away from virgin polyester and working towards using more materials that are either sustainably sourced or upcycled. We have also started to include more natural materials, like natural latex, bamboo, Australian wool, sustainably sourced TENCEL and cotton.
2020
Zero Mattress
The Comfort Group's first fully recyclable mattress launched. Designed to come back to the factory at the end of life for recycling.
2021
Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) community
We analyse and report on sustainability practices within our supply chain, share critical business information with customers and other stakeholders, undertake regular SMETA audits and focus on improving our sustainability performance.
2021
Hybrid Fleet Transition
Sales moved to a Toyota hybrid vehicle fleet. Further transition to fully electric vehicles will be considered once charging infrastructure is established in remote service areas.
2021
Biodegradable Packaging
Biodegradable plastic packaging is introduced in select ranges. This 100% biodegradable packaging uses nontoxic additives. It will biodegrade in landfill within three years and leave no residue at the end of the process.
2023
Soft Plastic Recycling
The Comfort Group is committed to using recyclable soft plastics for packaging across its ranges. It actively encourages consumers to recycle soft plastic packaging and shipping materials, and is a proud member of the Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme in NZ.
