We care for the better

The Ferrero Group has expressed its commitment to environmentally safe practices around the world and is committed to educating employees and suppliers of its environmental principles. Ferrero Australia is part of the Ferrero Group. For the operations, located in Lithgow, this commitment is realised through the global certification to ISO 14001, the Environmental Management Systems Standard. For the Business Unit, located in North Sydney, it is realised through local adaptation of the ISO 14001 procedure. Practically Ferrero Australia operates an integrated environmental management system across the two divisions. Ferrero Australia intends to promote the prevention of pollution and the continual improvement of the environmental performance of the factory, and in particular: - To apply the best available technologies when defining new projects and operational programmes. - To guarantee an efficient use of energy, materials and natural resources. - To make a responsible use of water. - To prevent, as far as possible and to minimise in both qualitative and quantitative sense, their impact to the environment (water, air, soil, waste and emissions). Such a continual improvement is pursued by setting objectives and targets, measurable by means of suitable indicators, which are referred to the different environmental compartments, which are progressively defined and updated considering the relevant priorities.

Ferrero Sustainability Actions

Protect the environment

Our commitment to protecting the environment extends to the communities around our operations. We support them and encourage our employees to volunteer their time towards initiatives to protect biodiversity and enhance the local environment.

Engaging employees to drive down waste

Every member of the Ferrero Packaging team is passionate about driving change in today’s packaging revolution. Now, they are stepping up to take on a bigger role as material experts, sustainability champions and packaging designers. Through internal collaboration, learning programs and engagement in sustainability workshops, we are strengthening our collective energy to drive our sustainable packaging journey. We’ve have launched a multi-channel communication approach to raise awareness and engage employees around the world to understand and support the Group’s commitment to make its packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

Improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers

Within our cocoa supply chain, in March 2018, Ferrero received the Fairtrade Germany Award for our long-term partnership with Fairtrade and cooperative union ECOOKIM. Through this collaboration and many more activities within Ferrero’s cocoa sustainability program, Ferrero aims at improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and offering future perspectives as well as at protecting and restoring the forests. At the same time, we get closer to fulfilling our promise to source 100% sustainable cocoa beans for all Ferrero products by the end of 2020.

Ferrero Sustainability Commitments

2015

Palm Oil

In January 2015, Ferrero reached its target to source 100% RSPO certified and segregated palm oil, and has continued to do so since. Last year, the company was ranked the most sustainable in the industry by WWF in its Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard.

2020

Sustainable Cocoa

In 2019, 81% of the cocoa beans Ferrero sourced were certified sustainable, and the company is on track to achieve 100% segregated and traceable cocoa beans by the end of 2020. This will enable Ferrero to have full visibility of its supply chain and to address issues in a targeted way. Moving forward, Ferrero is working to strengthen its cocoa sustainability strategy. Activities include scaling up programmes on the ground with suppliers and NGO partners as well as implementing Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems in the entire cocoa supply chain.

2025

Packaging

In 2019, Ferrero announced a commitment to make its packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. As part of this announcement, Ferrero signed up to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, reflecting its ambition to play an active role in eliminating problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging through redesign and innovation.
