In the realm of construction and interior design, the choice of paints and coatings extends far beyond mere aesthetics. These products wield significant influence over both the environment and human health. Recognising this critical intersection, Wattyl, a prominent name in the coatings industry across Australia and New Zealand, has embarked on a steadfast journey towards sustainability.

A commitment to sustainability

Wattyl understands that sustainability is not merely a goal but a responsibility. From the inception of its products to their application and eventual disposal, Wattyl is dedicated to minimising its environmental footprint. This commitment is not just rhetoric; it’s embedded in their operational ethos and product design philosophy.

Independent GECA Certification as a Benchmark

One of the cornerstones of Wattyl’s sustainability efforts is obtaining rigorous and independent certification for select products. Wattyl has demonstrated its leadership via GECA certification since 2006, a significant achievement to maintain over almost two decades. By having products assessed against GECA’s Paints & Coatings lifecycle ecolabel standard, Wattyl must meet critical environmental, health, social, and quality criteria across each product’s entire lifecycle, from the extraction of raw materials to the end of its life.

“When customers see the GECA ecolabel on a Wattyl product, they can be confident that it has undergone a robust third-party assessment against science-based benchmarks relevant to the specific impacts of paints and coatings—meaning it’s a better choice for people and the planet,” says Kendall Benton-Collins, GECA’s Strategic Communications Manager.

To maintain GECA certification, every licensee must have their products or services reassessed every three years against the current version of their standard. Wattyl is currently undergoing recertification.

Prioritising Indoor Air Quality and Health

Wattyl sets a precedent in today’s world, where indoor air quality is increasingly recognised as crucial for human health and well-being. Their GECA certified paints prioritise indoor air quality by employing ultra-low VOC (volatile organic compounds) formulas.

VOCs are organic chemicals emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids, including paints, and are detrimental to indoor air quality. They can trigger headaches, asthma, eye irritation, nose and throat irritation, damage to the liver, kidneys and central nervous system, and loss of coordination. Wattyl I.D. Advanced boasts an ultra-low VOC formula, containing only 1g per litre, ensuring minimal emissions that contribute to indoor air pollution – enhancing the quality of living spaces and aligning with global standards for healthier indoor environments.

Innovative Technology for Sustainability

Wattyl’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond VOC reduction. Their products incorporate Total Protection Technology, which encompasses mould protection, bacteria resistance, and superior wash and stain resistance.

A Visionary Approach

Sonya Gifford, Channel Marketing Manager at Wattyl, emphasises their proactive stance: “At Wattyl, we believe in leading by example. Our certifications are a testament to our ongoing efforts to minimise our environmental impact and exceed customer expectations.” This proactive approach drives innovation within the company and inspires industry-wide advancements towards sustainability.

Looking Ahead

As Wattyl continues to innovate and refine its products, its commitment to sustainability remains unwavering. By prioritising environmental responsibility and pushing the boundaries of product excellence, Wattyl not only meets but also sets new benchmarks for sustainable practices in the coatings industry. Wattyl’s GECA certified paints contribute to buildings and fitouts achieving Green Star credits via the Green Building Council of Australia.

Wattyl’s journey towards sustainability is part of its ethos. By integrating sustainability into every facet of its operations, Wattyl envisions a brighter future for our built environments and underscores the transformative power of responsible corporate citizenship.
